Scaffolding learners in designing investigation assignments for a computer simulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study examined the effect of scaffolding students who learned by designing assignments for a computer simulation on the physics topic of alternating circuits. We compared the students’ assignments and the knowledge acquired in a scaffolded group (N5 23) and a nonscaffolded group (N5 19). The scaffold consisted of a Design Sheet that guided students through the different steps in the design of assignments (generate an idea, transform the idea into an assignment, and evaluate the assignment) and provided them with specific directions on how to perform these steps. On average, students in the non-scaffolded group designed more assignments than students in the scaffolded group, but the scaffolded students designed relative by more assignments about the relations in the domain, more often gave exact descriptions of the relations in the domain, and more often referred back to the computer simulation to explain their findings. No differences on knowledge tests, however, were found between the two groups of students. In the discussion, we give suggestions on how to adapt the scaffolding to improve not only the learning process but also knowledge acquisition.

Exploring EFL Learners’ Autonomy in Reading Comprehension: Computer-Assisted versus Conventional Contexts
This study explored the autonomy of advanced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in reading comprehension through scaffolding and jigsaw in computer-assisted and conventional contexts. After being homogenized through the reading section of DIALANG proficiency test, a total of 80 female advanced EFL learners with the age range of 21 to 45 were selected as the participants of the study. ...
متن کاملGroup Collaboration, Scaffolding Instruction, and Peer Assessment of Iranian EFL Learners Oral Tasks
Peer assessment has gained growing popularity in education and teaching. Being a learning tool, evaluating their peers can equip learners with skills to develop judgments about what forms high-quality work. There have been however research gaps in the literature showing a lack of adequate work on the investigation of peer assessment in a group-oriented classroom context. The present study inten...
متن کاملInterface between L2 learners’ pragmatic performance, language proficiency, and individual/group ZPD
One of the theories accounting for pragmatic development of L2 learners is Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory. This study investigated the development of EFL learners' pragmatic competence through the lens of an important concept of Vygotsky’s theory, i.e. the zone of proximal development. The study was conducted to answer two questions. The first question was wheth...
متن کاملThe Sociological Effects of Peer/ Teacher Technology-Enhanced Scaffolding through Process Approach on Young Male vs. Female EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Knowledge
Gender is considered a sociological construct and investigating the role of gender in foreign language learning contexts is highly important due to the effects of sociological factors in learning. Therefore, the present study set out to explore the sociological effects of peer and teacher scaffolding through the process approach in a technology-enhanced environment on the vocabulary learning of...
متن کاملDesigning Better Scaffolding in Simulation-Based Learning Environments Teaching Science Systems: A Pilot Study Report
Systems are an important part in today’s science education. Computer simulations have many advantages in teaching science systems. Our research goal is to test whether a hierarchical instructional scaffolding framework embedded in simulation-based learning environments and retrospective mental modeling task could facilitate mental model construction in learning science systems. This pilot study...
